“This car bores a hole in the air like a sound barrier-cracking jet” – Autocar’s verdict on The Mercedes-AMG CLK DTM
Built to celebrate Bernd Schneider’s 2003 German Touring Car Championship, the two-seater (the rears are removed to save weight and give more room for the front buckets) with wide arches and massive tyres was a low-run special intended for friends and family: buyers included F1 drivers Jenson Button, Takuma Sato and Kimi Räikkönen.
At the heart of the car is a 574bhp 5.5-litre supercharged V8, a modified version of the engine found in the SL55 AMG. At 3,500rpm drivers have 590lb ft of torque at their disposal, and the five-speed automated manual transmission is controlled via a pair of wheel mounted-paddles. Weighing in at 1,742kg, the mighty AMG supercar will hit 62mph in only 3.9 seconds, blasting on to a (limited) 199mph.
Only 100 were made by hand by the craftsmen at Affalterbach.
