Early one morning a quarter of a century ago, Italian government officials arrived outside a gleaming, state-of-the-art architectural masterpiece that had been hailed as one of the most ambitious and exciting industrial sites in the world when it was unveiled barely five years earlier. Their purpose? To lower the curtain on a quixotic adventure, a roller-coaster of ambition, money, showmanship and bitter rivalries.
