“Starting from below 20mph, the car accelerates, but not excitingly. At 1,800 rpm it begins to pull acceptably, continuing unexceptionally to around 3,000 rpm. At 3,200 rpm the note of the always audible engine changes and the car shoots forward; at 4,500 a heartwarming deep growl begins and one feels an almost unbelievable further increase in the pressure of the seat on one's back which is vastly exhilarating, continuing as it does all the way to around 7,000 rpm. When introduced at the October 1972 Paris Motor Show, the Carrera RS 2.7, scheduled to be a run of just 500 cars for homologation purposes, sold out only a week later. The board immediately sanctioned a further 500 and by the time production ended the following year a total of 1,580 had been produced.
