Ferrari Collectors, Hold on Tight
Overnight Bonhams finally revealed what many knew or suspected already: the first of the recently sold Violati collection will be offered at their Quail Lodge auction next month. It's the collection's star car, no less, and extraordinarily it's going on the block without reserve price. The Ferrari 250 GTO the late Fabrizio Violati had bought back in 1965 and raced hard for many years has had a colourful and not always easy life but it's one of the most valuable cars ever offered at auction. Yet no GTO has sold at auction in living memory, although Bonhams were the last to try back in 2000.
The motoring world will be watching, and probably no one more closely than 35 other GTO owners...Is this the ringing bell the market has been waiting for, or proof that we really are in a new era? They'd better rent a very big tent as everyone wants to find out.
