OLLON-VILLARS HILLCLIMB, SEPTEMBER 15-16, 2007

Considered by many connoisseurs as the purest form of motorsport, hillclimb racing is also one of the oldest, setting man and machine against the clock and curves of a challenging and often perilous road in glorious mountain surroundings, none more so than the slopes of the Ollon-Villars course where on ten epic occasions between 1953 and 1971 the swish of skis in winter gave way to the roar of racing cars and motorbikes in summer.

Great drivers from across the world competed there in their heyday, including world champions Jim Clark and Jack Brabham, Maurice Trintignant, Jean Behra, Nino Vaccarella, Lodovico Scarfiotti, Wolfgang Von Trips and Le Mans winners Olivier Gendebien and Hans Herrmann. German driver Hans Stuck, fond of the hillclimbs like his father, also took part, as did colourful Brit Innes Ireland who so enjoyed his stays that he moved to the Swiss mountains later in his life.

Swiss legends were often present at Villars sur Ollon to defend their home turf; the likes of Jo Siffert, Baron Toulo de Graffenreid and Peter Schetty, who won here in the one-off Ferrari 212E Montagna in 1969, were all regulars. Silvio Moser and Willy Daetwyler were also local favourites, but the all time hill record still belongs to late, great Frenchman Francois Cevert.

2007 will see the fourth historic re-enactment of the Ollon-Villars hillclimb on September 15 and 16, with a selection of almost 200 vintage cars and bikes; if you get the chance, don’t miss this event as replete with history as the 8km course is magnificent, with all the ingredients for a very pleasant weekend in the Alps. The event takes place at irregular intervals, depending on when local farmers can be persuaded to allow spectators onto their land; the last hill climb was four years ago. The entry fee is modest, Geneva airport is just over an hour away, the setting is beautiful and the atmosphere relaxed. It’s an event we highly recommend. Kidston SA will be sponsoring this year’s hillclimb and taking part; we hope to see you there. Entries are almost full so act soon. For information please refer to: http://www.ollon-villars.com/

GENEVA CLASSICS, OCTOBER 4-7, 2007

Certainly the most welcome and successful addition to the calendar last year, the second edition of Geneva Classics on October 4 to 7, 2007 promises to be a great success as the event quickly becomes established amongst European collectors and enthusiasts.

Held at Palexpo, site of the Salon de l’Automobile adjacent to Geneva’s international airport, Geneva Classics is similar to the Paris based Retromobile February in its scope which includes classic cars, bikes, boats and planes, some of the latter being conveniently exposed on the airport tarmac outside.

Various car clubs will have booths as will classic car dealers and restorers. Artwork and books will be displayed; there will again be an auction held by Bern based firm The Sportscar Auction; special exhibitions will be featured, including a Chopard Mille Miglia retrospective; manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Alfa Romeo are expected, as well as venerable examples of the first generation of civilian and military aircraft. Kidston SA will once again be hosting a champagne bar and displaying a selection of historic cars. Come by for a drink!

Many prominent European collectors and professionals of the classic car world attended last year and by word of mouth, this year’s event promises to be bigger still. (Dealers please note: only two stands are left).
